From murder capital to reitiree haven, how Medellin has outgrown Narcos

“Medellín is Colombia’s second-largest city with a population of 2.5 million. Once the world’s murder capital, it’s now a hotspot for U.S. retirees.” – Jim Wyss, Miami Herald

Hidden behind an outdated reputation as the world’s murder capital, Medellín is still Latin America’s best kept secret, but savvy travelers are catching on. The city’s gorgeous, year-round spring weather, modern infrastructure, and world-class healthcare have found a following both among digital nomads and retirees.

The U.S. Social Security Administration sent 6,704 retirement checks to Colombia in 2017, a near doubling since 2010. International Living named Medellín the 6th best place to retire in 2018. It should come as no surprise that our Lifeafar headquarters are in the heart of El Poblado, Medellín’s most desirable neighborhood. For over 10 years, we’ve been helping match house-hunters and investors with their ideal properties in trendy neighborhoods such as El Poblado, Laureles, and Envigado. So far, their bets have paid off. Over the past 10 years real estate has appreciated at between 9-11% annually, and investor returns on our rental properties continue to outperform American markets by a wide margin.
